The Desert Train
The powerful Diesel locomotive, type DH with 3600 PS weighs 120 tons and can accelerate up to
120 km/h. However, during our desert trip the maximum speed will be only 50km/h.
The rails are leading through a mountainous region sometimes rising up to16% and the engine
copes with a heavy load of 500 tons.
The first wagon (XRDS) provides the electricity and air conditioning.
Then follows a first class passenger wagon.
The last wagon is the restaurant offering a panoramic view. The windows can be opened and the
wagon will be heated in winter.
Oujda, a Berber town – from here starts our trip with the Oriental Desert Train,
is embedded in the plateau of Angand, surrounded by the Beni Snassen Mountains. The old town
(medina) dating back to the 13th century still has an old Kasbah and an original city wall with the
“Bab Sidi Abdel-Wahab” giving access to the inner parts. Excavations revealed a Roman Fortress.
Between 1907 and 1956, Oujda was one of the military bases of the French Foreign Legion. There
is a small international airport with increasing significance since the coast in this area is a strongly
developing leisure spot with fantastic white beaches at the Mediterranean Sea.
Bouarfa - the terminus of our trip,
is a tiny but ambitious town with just one hotel. It seams to be the “End of the World“ but Bouarfa
actually is the administrative centre of the province Figuig. It is also the place where Bauxite is
gained and then transported to the Northern harbours.
Erfoud
is just a small town with approximately 25.000 inhabitants and well know for its delicious dates
and fine Morocco leather ware. A former coral riff is close to Erfoud. Therefore you will find
everywhere fossil traders and workshops. Erfoud, too, was a base of the Foreign Legion.
Merzouga,
right in front of the famous dunes, is located in a dried-out lake. Every morning, you may enjoy
the breathtaking sight of the wonderful sunrise. There also is one very amazing flamingo lake – in
the middle of desert! |
